Above are a few outfit ideas and color palettes if you or your family are struggling with what to wear! Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Similar colors. Coordinate outfits by tying in similar colors or color families. Maybe one child wears a cream sweater with blue pants while the other wears a blue shirt and cream pants and a green vest, while the parents mix in cream, blue and green. Sometimes I find it's easiest to have mom decide her outfit and then coordinate the family around that.
Don't match too much. Don't be too matchy matchy... This often creates a dull look for the photos and look dated.
Color is good. Add color! Often if someone opts for blue jeans and white shirts for the whole family the photos are missing that pop of color to draw the eye to the subjects!
No neon. Neon colors are a no-no. They don't photograph well and reflect the neon color onto faces.
No logos. Try to stay away from logos on shirts. I can always photoshop them out if needed and preferred, but a logo on a shirt is often the first thing the eye sees, and wouldn't you rather people notice your smiling faces?! Logos also date the photos quickly.
Layers. Layers and textures add visual interest to images. Layers can be added by adding a sweater, scarves, vest, suspenders, etc. Textures can be added by choosing an outfit with textures, jewelry, lace, flowers to the hair, belts, fun tights etc.
Feet. Don’t forget your shoes and socks. You will likely be doing some walking during your shoot so it’s important to choose shoes you can walk in. However, it’s also important to make sure your shoes look nice. Wedges are a great look for women and you don’t have worry about them getting stuck in the grass. Your child shouldn’t be in Mickey sneakers, Crocs, or neon colored shoes. No one should show up to the session in sneakers. If you have shoes that require socks make sure that your socks are appropriate as they may show when you sit on the ground. Know that during the summer months it’s completely acceptable to do some bare feet shots!
Keep colors in mind. Don't wear colors you don't love to wear or feel good in. You want to feel comfortable and confident.
Keep in mind, these are all just suggestions to make the session the best it can be! At the end of the day, it's most important that you and your family are comfortable and yourselves!
